What is Wellness Coaching?
Coaching can be a difficult idea to grasp for some – it’s not exactly seeing a psychologist or a counsellor, but it IS someone you see when you’re ready to really move forward in your life.
Unlike seeing a counsellor or a psychologist who usually work on the past in order to help you to heal, resolve past grievances, forgive, or let go (which are all totally necessary and recommended for anyone suffering grief or loss, abuse, serious mental illness or the like), coaching is more so for those who are at a reasonably healthy stage of their journey and feel ready to take the next step.
Coaching enables a person to engage and connect with a professional on all different aspects of their lives in order to gain a sense of wholeheartedness or contentment. A sense of balance if you will.
As we navigate through our lives, it can be easy to neglect certain areas or block out things we just don’t want to ‘deal’ with, or things we’ve ALWAYS wanted to do or become, but just not had the courage to take the leap – whether it be your diet, your relationships or your career – coaching helps you identify what areas are lacking, and helps you to put those wheels of change and growth in motion. It's exciting stuff!
Why do you need a coach to help with this?
Simply because, most of feel that niggle inside us wanting to become something more, or something different, or address inner values and purpose but simply haven’t gotten around to addressing it – this usually due to a fear of change, a fear of being misunderstood, or a fear of being judged...
That’s why, no matter how good your best friend may be, sometimes it takes speaking to someone outside of your circle, to gain a proper understanding of your inner workings. Whatever it is for you, many of these fears or blockages cannot be opened up, without the guidance and helping hand of someone you trust and feel safe with.
We as humans are very good at wearing masks – the person we are at work, the person we are in our relationships, the person we are in front of our family. It can be draining adapting and changing who we are to suit our surroundings. Wouldn’t it be great to just be you all the time?
A coach is someone who listens, and helps you the most through exposing and allowing you to be vulnerable to those areas of your life of which you have placed barriers. To be vulnerable to change and growth, will allow for new doors to be open and for the ‘real you’ to shine through – without the fear or the boundaries attached.
Coaching can help with:
A coach is not a specific medical expert (unless they have that relevant qualification) and therefore should not be used to help treat serious medical conditions or disease. If you are suffering from a serious illness or disease, you may decide to see a coach in conjunction with your medical practitioner or psychiatrist, to help with the mental and emotional support which you require during this time.
No two coaches are the same
All different coaches specialise in different areas – for some that may be nutrition, for others it’s mother hood, and for some it’s career. It all depends on what experience and qualifications they personally have.
It’s best to find the coach that suits you and who you feel you will gain the most from – you need to feel comfortable with your coach in order to get the most of out your sessions with them.
Personally, my qualifications as a coach lie in Integrative Nutrition as well as Career and Business. I have my Bachelor Qualifications in Human Resource Management, and Small Business Management as well as my Advanced Diploma Qualifications in Nutritional Medicine and Wellness Coaching. I have also studied Health Coaching through IIN, am a Level 3 Reiki Practitioner and am currently furthering my study as an Integrative Functional Nutrition Coach.
