Having grown up in Indonesia, I was always surrounded by amazing herbs and spices, as well as 'witch doctor'-like tonics, tinctures and potions to help you ease a sore stomach, boost immunity or cure the common cold. Traditional ways of healing the body always started with food...
This elixir, known in Indonesia as 'Jamu' is made traditionally from turmeric, ginger, black pepper, lime, honey and water. As we all know by now, Turmeric really does hold super food status due to its lengthy list of health benefits. It is held in very high regard both in Indian Ayurvedic and Chinese Traditional Medicine purposes. The presence of the compound 'curcumin' is said to alleviate arthritis and join inflammation as well as aid in the reduction and prevention of some cancer cell growths. It has an extremely high antioxidant level and is widely used in different 'detoxification' programs due to its cleansing and anti-inflammatory effect on the liver. Note that fresh turmeric, is much more powerful than the dried, powdered version.
Have a shot of this elixir every day, and you're sure to reap the benefits!
Makes 1 litre
3/4 cup fresh turmeric root
3cm piece ginger
1 tsp raw, unprocessed honey
1/2 tsp black pepper
4 cups filtered water
Juice of 1 lime
NOTE: This recipe can get very yellow and stain nearly everything in your kitchen! If you want, wear disposable gloves and be prepared for your utensils/food processor/pot to be stained yellow... at least for a few weeks.
